Lesson for week of June 8th
Sidewalk Art
For our last week of Art class, I want you to enjoy creating and being outside and away from technology. This is a video showing how the concept of chalk drawing began over 500 years ago when beggers realized they could make money by creating temporary art with chalk on the sidewalk or streets outside of churches. The artist was rewarded for their efforts with coins. The visitors to the various cathedrals in Italy would love the beautiful artwork and they began calling these traveling artists Madonnari artists because most of them drew pictures of the Madonna. This Italian tradition continued for centuries and soon became popular in many other countries in Europe. This video in the movie Mary Poppins is an example of how people started to use their artistic talents to make money. It also is a great song.
This is a video of Mrs. Morris in a chalk drawing contest. I entered for my 50th birthday. I am proud to say that I took first place and was able to take my whole family out to dinner that day. There is nothing more fun than creating artwork for others to enjoy.
For this week in art, I would like you to create a sidewalk chalk Photography. There are some examples below. Be creative and have fun!

Creating an Owl by using Pattern and Shape
For this weeks lesson we are going to focus on drawing an Owl. The artist that I want you to learn about is John James Audubon, who was a naturalist painter. Naturalist artists wanted to paint their subject to look realistic. James John Audubon had a passion for birds and wanted to capture all the birds of America in their natural habitat in his illustrations. Mr. Audubon traveled all over America observing birds in nature and documenting important aspects such as: what they eat; the vegetation they used to build their nest; and how they interacted and moved in their surroundings. He did this all before the invention of the camera. The books of birds that he created are so important because some of the birds that he painted are extinct and they are the only images we have showing what they looked like. Watch the video below about John James Audubon and his famous books of birds.

Responding and Connecting Activity to the famous sculpture Alberto Giacometti.
Albert Giacometti was one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century. He was also a painter, draftsman, and printmaker. Giacometti often had doubts about the success of his artwork, but this proved to be a great motivator for him to keep practicing his art. After World War II, he sculpted his most famous and recognizable tall and slender figure sculptures. Some examples are shown in this video below.
Wacky Hair Portrait With Emotion Lesson For The Week Of May 25
For this lesson students will explore the elements of Line, Color, Texture and Shape. Students will create a portrait of themselves or someone they may know that has not had the chance to get their haircut during this remote learning time. A portrait is a picture of a person and a self portrait is a picture of the artist who is creating this artwork. Please remember to think about the emotions of the person you are drawing so we can see how they might feel about their haircut at this time. You also could draw a picture of someone who has gotten their haircut by a family member. For example, I had to cut my son's hair and he was not happy with the way I cut it because he said it was too short. When I draw his picture I want to think about how his facial expression looked when he saw what his haircut looked like. Below is a video of one of my favorite artists, Vincent Van Gogh, who did many self portraits and used color in a very interesting way. This artist made many pictures of himself because it was and easy subject for him to paint. Watch the video of Vincent Van Gogh's self portraits below.
Here is me giving my son and husband a remote hair cut below and they look pretty happy.

Howard Pyle and Pirates lesson for 3rd- 5th grade
For our Lesson this week we will learn about the artist Howard Pyle, an American Illustrator and Author, who lived most of his life in Wilmington Delaware. Pyle and his family often vacationed in Rehoboth beach and the seaside landscapes inspired the backgrounds in his paintings of pirates. The Delaware Art Museum owns many of his works. Below are a few of the paintings that this museum owns. Also you will see a video below about pirates because Howard Pyle's illustrations influenced many popular movies such as the Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

Coil Snake Using Pattern Lesson
In March we were about to begin a lesson having to do with the symbol of snakes in different cultures. For example in Ireland there is a folk tale about how snakes were run out of Ireland. It may be surprising that, Snakes, for many cultures, have a positive meaning! For example, many cultures all over the world have associated snakes with rebirth and transformation. Many African cultures associate a snake with wisdom and Eastern Asian cultures associate the snake as a guardian of sacred places. Did you know that a snake is part of the symbol we use for the medical profession? This started way back in Greek history because a snake was considered sacred and used for healing rituals. That is how it became an important symbol for our doctors and nurses today! Below you will see how the snake has been used as a symbol for the medical field.
Be creative when you send a picture of your snake. How does the perception of your snake change depending on how you display your art? Here are some examples of how I chose some ways to display my snake.
Remote learning for 3rd- 5th grade: week of may 5th
Cat and Dog Drawing Lesson
High Five Friday it's Art Day!!! For this lesson I want you to draw a cat or a dog from observation. Drawing from observation means to draw what you see in front of you. If your dog or cat will not sit still for you then take a picture of them. If you do not have a cat or dog then use your Chromebook to find resources to look at. Often the artist looks for resources to have an image of what they need to draw. Below is a painting that I did of my dog Otis that I just entered into an art show. I did several drawings of my dog first and then planned my composition and what materials I was going to use. For the fish, I needed a reference because I did not have a fish at home to look at, so I looked for images of fish that would be in the correct position for my dog's mouth. I found many good resources on my computer. Be creative with your material and think about the background behind your cat or dog. Post a picture of you with your drawing when you are done.
Below is a video of animals that have been mummified a long time ago in Egypt. Many animals were considered sacred by ancient Egyptians as they believed that they were related to the gods. The cat was a symbol for the god Bastet, the goddess of happiness and love. The Egyptians loved their pets just like we do today. Cats were their favorite pet but they also had pet dogs. When their cats and dogs died they were mummified because they believed that they would need them in the afterlife. In this video below you will see how archeologists and scientists are still learning about the importance of pets in Ancient Egypt.
Remote learning for Kindergarden- 2nd grade :week of May 4th
Butterflies and Rainbows
For my Kindergarten through 2nd-Grade Students, I created a lesson based on the worksheet on butterflies and rainbows that you can found in your packet from the Red Clay District. When I researched artwork that had butterflies in them I was surprised to see that Vincent Van Gogh had created some paintings of butterflies. I love how he takes the viewer into his paintings as if you are seeing the world through the butterfly's eyes.
4th Remote Learning Lesson For 2nd - 5th Grade : Week of April 27th
The focus of this week's Red Clay School District's art packet is the color wheel and how to divide a circle into five equal parts. I wanted to introduce you to a French abstract artist named Robert Delaunay. In his artwork he had a strong interest in color and geometric shapes. I want you to come up with an artwork to share that uses a circle and color. Watch the video below from the MoMA museum and look at the three paintings completed by Robert Delaunay. I hope this will give you inspiration to create your own original artwork using color and a circle.
4th Remote Lesson For Kdg and 1st Grade From The Worksheet "The Bear Went Over The Mountain"
For this weeks lesson you received a coloring page worksheet that had a song "The Bear went Over The Mountain". We are going to make a picture of a bear this week since Baltz's school mascot is a Bear. I thought it would be great for you to see how Eric Karl created the illustrations in the Book, "Brown Bear". When you make your bear, you can try to use materials in a creative way just like this artist.
3rd Lesson For Remote Learning. Week of April 20, 2020
Earth day is an annual event that is celebrated around the world on April 22 to support environmental protection. Earth day was first celebrated in 1970 and was founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson. This event was created to raise awareness on the negative impact that our actions make on our environment. For this week's lesson you will find a worksheet in your packet that the Red Clay School District has provided called "Can you see out of a window?" This is a great topic for this week because we need to reflect about our actions and behaviors if we want our view outside to stay beautiful. I will give you many options this week to create something for Earth Day. First I will show you how you can use plants to make watercolor paint as I know that many of us do not have a lot of material at home. (Please do not attempt to make the paint without adult supervision!) The next video will be on the use of natural materials that the first humans in our world used to create cave paintings. Early humans didn't have stores to get their supplies so they had to be resourceful.
For my Earth Day artwork I drew a pen and ink drawing on a leaf that I dried. The scene was outside on the Brandywine River. This was a special place for me because my father often took me there to wade in the water and skip rocks. The Brandywine River at one time had a problem with pollution and you were encouraged to not go in the water. Environmentalists are now doing a lot to protect this beautiful river in our community. Below you will see my recycle project where I used copy paper of the history of the river, an old paper bag and a dried leaf.

First lesson for remote learning April 3rd, 2020
When thinking about the worksheet that you received in your packet I wanted to find an artist that utilized pattern in their own work. The artist is a contemporary artist which means they are still alive and producing art today. Yoyoi Kusama was born in Japan and came to the United States in 1957. She returned to Japan and has become one of Japan's most prominent contemporary artists in that country. I chose her work to show you because Kusama uses a lot of pattern and is also is a very creative in the wide range of images that she creates .
Mrs. Morris demonstrating the lesson for the week of April 3rd.
In this lesson I want you to view the video above of Kusama and notice the creative way she expresses her thoughts and ideas with the use of pattern. For our first remote learning lesson I wanted all my students to have an opportunity to express how they are feeling during this new way of learning. The theme for our picture is "Gratitude". Before you begin your drawing make sure to watch the second video of me in my studio space. When you are done please send me a picture of your drawing so I can post it in a blog where we can share our work. Make sure you provide a title for your work , put your first name and your grade when you submit it to me through email or text. The title of my drawing that I did in the video is "Together We Learn". Sending me your work is optional but it would make me so happy to see everyone's beautiful artwork.
